FOCUSING DRIVER ATTENTION

A simulator-based study comparing the impact of four AR HUD visual modalities on driver takeover performance.

This project explores how AR heads-up displays (HUDs) can support drivers during sudden control transitions in conditionally automated vehicles. I built an immersive driving simulator in Unity and integrated Tobii eye-tracking to track real-time gaze distributions and fixation behavior during takeover events. A 72-participant study tested four visual alert designs—Gaze, Obstacle, Hybrid, and Standard—within this dynamic environment, and statistical comparisons revealed clear performance differences. The obstacle-based HUD consistently led to faster, more confident driver responses and higher situation awareness.
